Chimney Sweep & Cleaning in Mentone

Behind the render of a Mentone mission-style chimney is an unlined brick flue that has carried open fires since the interwar years. FreshDuct sweeps it clean, cameras the brick the render hides, and leaves you photos of both.

Rendered chimney you cannot read from outside? The sweep camera reads it from inside.

A Mentone open fire lays creosote onto brick joints that decades of salt air have already softened, and a rendered stack gives no outward sign of either. The sweep is the one time a year the inside of that chimney gets seen.
Inside the Render

Sweeping the unlined flues in Mentone’s rendered chimneys

Mentone’s Spanish-mission and interwar homes were built with open fireplaces, and the chimneys that serve them are brick under a coat of render. From the street the stack looks smooth and sound. Inside, the flue is the same unlined brick you would find in an Edwardian home a few streets back, with creosote from every fire since the house was built sitting on joints that decades of coastal weather have worked soft.

That makes the sweep more than a clean. The rods and rotary head take the flue walls back to brick with the fireplace sealed and the vacuum running, and then the camera goes up. On a rendered stack that camera pass is the only honest look anyone gets at the joints, because there is nothing to read from outside. If the inside is sound, you have photos that say so; if a joint has opened, you know before winter.

The Edwardian and Federation homes and the bungalows around Como Parade get the same treatment in bare brick, and the newer coastal rebuilds, where the flue is steel, get a brush sized to it and a cowl check for the salt-crusted creosote that builds at the top. Every Mentone sweep ends with before and after photos of the flue and, if we have been on the roof, a photo of the cap and the crown.

Local Know-How

Chimney Sweep & Cleaning in Mentone: what is different here

Render tells you nothing

On a mission-style Mentone stack there are no joints to read from the ground, so the sweep’s camera pass does the reading from inside. We photograph the flue walls after brushing and point out any open joint rather than leaving it to a future leak.

Soft joints under the soot

Coastal weather has softened the mortar inside many Mentone flues, so the brush has to clean without gouging. We use a rotary head sized to the flue and let the camera, not the rods, judge when the walls are clean.

Open fires, used properly

Many Mentone fireplaces are lit most cold nights, which is what they were built for. Regular use lays regular creosote, and an unlined flue holds it in every joint, so a yearly sweep before the season is the honest minimum here.

The chimney you cannot see from the driveway

A sweep in a Mentone mission-style home is contained like any other: drop sheets, a sealed opening, the vacuum running throughout. What is different is what you get at the end, which is the only set of photos of the inside of a chimney nobody can inspect from outside.

If we go up on the roof, the render around the crown gets tapped while we are there. A hollow note is worth knowing about, and it costs you nothing extra to be told.

FAQs

Chimney Sweep & Cleaning in Mentone — questions answered

Can a sweep tell me whether the flue inside our rendered Mentone chimney is sound?

Yes, and it is the only routine job that can. Once the flue is brushed back to brick, the camera pass shows the joints and any cracks that the render on the outside hides completely. You get the photos either way, and a straight answer on whether anything needs repair.

Do you sweep the chimneys in the newer homes near Mentone beach as well?

Yes. A newer coastal home usually has a steel flue rather than a brick one, and it is brushed with a head sized to its diameter. The cowl on top is where salt and creosote crust together, so it gets cleared and photographed, and we say if it is rusting through.

How often should a chimney be swept?

Fire authorities recommend an annual sweep before winter. If you burn most nights, burn unseasoned or soft wood, or run a heater on low for long periods, sooner.

Is chimney sweeping messy?

Not with FreshDuct. We lay drop sheets, seal the fireplace opening and use contained, high-power vacuuming so the soot is captured rather than left in your living room.

What is the difference between a sweep and a deep clean?

A standard sweep clears regular soot and light creosote. A deep clean tackles heavy, baked-on or glazed creosote that a normal brush will not shift.
