Burnside climbs from the plain into the gullies below the escarpment, and the higher you go the colder and damper the winters get. Combine that with large interwar and post-war homes on wooded blocks around Beaumont, Hazelwood Park and the approaches to Waterfall Gully, and you get one of Adelaide’s heaviest concentrations of genuine wood-heater and open-fire use — not decorative, but the main heat source through June and July.

Heavy use changes everything about the chimney. A flue burning most nights through winter accumulates creosote far faster than an occasional fire, and slow overnight burns on damp wood are the worst case of all for glazed creosote build-up. On top of that, Burnside sits on the bushfire interface: the hills face has a serious fire history, and an uncapped flue throwing embers over a gum canopy in February is a hazard to the whole street, not just your roof.
