Chimney Repairs in Dandenong

In Dandenong a stack can look sound from the street while the joints inside the flue have been eaten away from behind. FreshDuct cameras the flue, photographs the stack and repairs only what has failed, on old-town brick and post-war chimneys alike.

Chimney looks fine from the footpath? On old Dandenong flues the damage is on the inside — we camera it.

Decades of acidic coal and briquette residue attack mortar from inside the flue, so joints fail where no one can see them. Autumn is the time to camera the flue and repoint or reline before the fire goes back on.
Inside-Out Repairs

Why Dandenong chimneys fail inside the flue first

Most chimney repairs start with something visible: a leaning stack, a crumbling crown, a rust streak down the tiles. Dandenong’s oldest flues fail the other way round. Coal and briquette smoke left a sulphur-rich deposit on the brick, moisture turned it mildly acidic, and for fifty years it has been dissolving the lime mortar behind it. The outside of the stack is often fine. The inside of the flue is where the joints have gone.

That is why we do not quote a Dandenong chimney from the roof. A camera goes up the flue and shows the state of the joints, whether bricks have shifted inward, and whether the flue is still sealed from the walls and roof timbers it passes. Then the stack is photographed outside: crown, mortar, flashing, cap. Only with both do you get a firm price, and it covers what has actually failed.

The repairs themselves depend on what the camera finds. Where the joints are eroded but the bricks are sound, we repoint from inside or fit a stainless steel liner that gives the flue a new, smooth, acid-proof wall. Where bricks have spalled we cut them out and match the replacements. Crowns are rebuilt to shed water, and flashing is replaced where a post-war tile roof meets the stack. Nineteenth-century brick in the oldest streets is repointed in lime, not cement.

Chimney Repairs in Dandenong: what is different here

Joints eaten from within

Acidic coal residue dissolves mortar from the flue side. A Dandenong stack can look intact outside while the inside is a set of loose bricks. We camera it and reline or repoint from inside rather than judging it from the roof.

Softer old-town masonry

The older streets hold flues laid in lime mortar that will not take hard cement. We repoint like for like, match the brick where one is replaced, and keep the tooling of the joint so the repair reads as part of the original stack.

Post-war tile-roof flashing

On the 1950s and 60s brick homes the usual leak is flashing where the stack meets a tiled roof, not the flue at all. We replace it with a stepped flashing and confirm the fix before the ceiling stain is repainted.

Nothing rebuilt that only needed repointing

A Dandenong chimney with mortar dust on the hearth may need a liner, or it may need a few joints repointed and a new crown. The camera decides. We photograph what we find, price only that, and confirm it before a trowel is picked up.

For rental owners and agents the photo set doubles as the maintenance record. Before, during and after images show the fault, the repair and the finished stack without anyone climbing a ladder.

FAQs

Chimney Repairs in Dandenong — questions answered

There is mortar dust in the grate of our old Dandenong fireplace — is the chimney unsafe?

It means joints inside the flue are losing their mortar, and in older Dandenong flues that is usually acidic coal or briquette residue at work. It is not necessarily unsafe today, but it needs a camera inspection to see how far it has gone and whether repointing or a stainless liner is the answer.

Can a stainless liner go into a narrow nineteenth-century Dandenong flue?

Often, yes. Flexible stainless liners are made in small diameters and follow bends. The camera inspection tells us the clear bore, and if the flue is too tight or too damaged for a liner we say so and talk about repointing from inside instead.

How do I know if my chimney needs repair?

White staining, crumbling mortar, loose or missing bricks, rust marks on the roof, water in the firebox after rain, or smoke seeping into rooms are the usual signs. A photographed inspection tells you what is cosmetic and what is not.

Do you reline flues?

Yes — stainless steel liners for cracked or unlined flues on open fireplaces and wood heaters, quoted firm after a camera inspection. Gas flue work goes through the licensed gas specialists we arrange.

Can you repair a chimney without scaffolding?

Often, with roof access and harness work. Taller or unstable stacks need scaffold, and we tell you before quoting rather than after.
