Geelong's Victorian and Edwardian homes still have their original open fireplaces, and many of those flues have not seen a brush in decades. FreshDuct sweeps and cameras period flues across the city, from the older streets near the waterfront to the interwar suburbs further out.
Restoring a Geelong period fireplace? Sweep and camera the flue before the first fire, not after.
Geelong's older suburbs are full of original open fireplaces, and a good share of them are being used again as the period homes are restored. That is the context for most of our sweeps here: an unlined Victorian or Edwardian flue with an unknown gap since its last clean, creosote layered on the brick, and an owner who wants to know it is safe before lighting it.
A first sweep in years is a different job from an annual one. The brush comes off the rods loaded, so we work the flue in passes with a rotary head sized to the brick, vacuum the smoke shelf, and then camera the length to see whether what is left is stubborn creosote that needs a deep clean or bare brick that needs nothing. The camera stills come to you either way.
Interwar and post-war homes further out from the centre are simpler: shorter brick flues, often with a heater retrofitted, swept from the firebox with the opening sealed and the vacuum running. Whatever the era, you get before and after stills of the flue and an honest word on whether the mortar or the cap needs looking at while the fire is out.
A sweep built for period flues that have gone years between cleans, with a camera pass to show what the brush left behind.
A Geelong period flue that has sat unused since the last owner holds creosote that has cured hard on the brick. We sweep in passes, camera the result and tell you plainly if a deep clean is needed before the fire is safe.
With no liner, every sweep of an original Geelong flue is also an inspection of the brick. Loose mortar that falls with the soot is a sign the flue needs relining or repointing, and we photograph it rather than sweeping past it.
Corio Bay air rusts caps and cowls, and a rusting cap sheds flakes into the flue and lets rain onto the brick. We look at the cap and flashing from the roof on every Geelong sweep and photograph anything that is on its way out.
Real photos from Melbourne jobs — not stock, not staged.

A camera pass after the sweep is what turns a clean into a decision. If the brick is sound, the fireplace is ready for winter. If the joints are open or the flue is cracked, you know before the first fire rather than after a smoky one.
Period Geelong living rooms are often mid-renovation or freshly finished, so the room is sheeted, the opening sealed and the vacuum kept running until the last rod is out. Photos of the flue come with the job.

Have it swept and camera-inspected before lighting anything. Years of disuse in an unlined flue means cured creosote, possibly a nest, and mortar that may have dropped out of the joints. The sweep clears it and the camera tells you whether the flue is fit to use.
Usually. The smell is old creosote on the brick absorbing moisture from humid air, and a full-length sweep that takes the flue back to bare brick removes most of it. If the smell persists after that, a cap to keep rain out of the flue is the next step.
Fire authorities recommend an annual sweep before winter. If you burn most nights, burn unseasoned or soft wood, or run a heater on low for long periods, sooner.
Not with FreshDuct. We lay drop sheets, seal the fireplace opening and use contained, high-power vacuuming so the soot is captured rather than left in your living room.
A standard sweep clears regular soot and light creosote. A deep clean tackles heavy, baked-on or glazed creosote that a normal brush will not shift.
