Chimney Caps & Cowls in Geelong

An open period flue is a funnel for Corio Bay weather. FreshDuct fits caps and bird guards to Geelong's original chimney pots, replaces rusted caps on interwar and post-war stacks, and cures downdraught with cowls that are tested, not assumed.

Rain reaching the Geelong firebox with no leak on the roof? The flue is open at the top — a cap fixes it.

Every litre of rain that goes down an uncapped period flue soaks into unlined brick and lime mortar on its way to the hearth. In Geelong the cap is not a finishing touch; it is the simplest piece of masonry protection the chimney will ever get.
Caps for Period Pots

Keeping weather and birds out of Geelong's old flues

Most of Geelong's Victorian and Edwardian chimneys were built with pots and no cap, because they were lit daily and the fire kept them dry. Now that many of these fireplaces are used a few nights a week or restored after years idle, the open pot becomes the problem: rain runs down the unlined brick, birds nest in the flue over summer, and the hearth is damp and littered by the first cold snap.

The fix is a cap that suits the pot. On an original terracotta pot we fit a cap with a bird guard that clamps or sits inside the pot without cutting it, so the roofline in a character area is unchanged. On the plainer interwar and post-war stacks, where a rusted galvanised cap is the usual finding, we replace it with a stainless or coated cap fixed to the crown with fasteners that will not corrode in the bay air.

Downdraught on a tall period stack near the waterfront is the third job. Wind coming off the bay across a two-storey roof pushes down an open flue and the fire smokes on exactly the nights you want it. An anti-downdraught cowl on the pot is the normal answer, and we check the draw with the cowl fitted and the fire lit before leaving.

Local Know-How

Chimney Caps & Cowls in Geelong: what is different here

Rain down unlined brick

An uncapped Victorian flue in Geelong takes every shower straight onto lime mortar that was never meant to be wet from the inside. A cap stops it at the pot, which is far simpler than repointing the flue later.

Pots kept, not cut

Original terracotta pots are part of what makes a Geelong period roofline. Our caps and guards fit to the pot rather than replacing it, so the chimney keeps its character and the streetscape stays as it was.

Caps that rust on the bay

Corio Bay air finishes a galvanised cap at the fixings within a few winters, and a cap that blows off leaves the flue open again. We fit stainless or coated caps with corrosion-resistant fasteners and seal them to the crown.

Sized To The Pot

Measured on the roof, tested from the hearth

Period pots come in more sizes than modern flues, so we measure on the roof rather than guessing from below, and match the cap or cowl to the pot and the problem. The quote is firm before anything is fitted.

After fitting, a draw test from the hearth confirms the fire still pulls cleanly with the cap on, and a roof photo of the finished pot comes with the invoice.

FAQs

Chimney Caps & Cowls in Geelong — questions answered

Can you fit a cap to the original terracotta pots on our Geelong Victorian without changing how the chimney looks?

Yes. We use caps and bird guards that clamp to the pot or sit inside it, so nothing is cut and the pot stays. From the street the stack looks the same; from inside, the rain and the nesting stop.

Our Geelong fireplace smokes when the wind comes off the bay. Is that a cap problem or a chimney problem?

Most often a terminal problem. Wind across the roof pushes down an open flue, and an anti-downdraught cowl on the pot usually cures it. If the draw is still poor with the cowl on, the cause is lower down, and we camera the flue rather than sell a second cowl.

Do I really need a chimney cap?

An open flue lets rain, leaves and birds straight in. A cap keeps the flue dry, keeps nests out and, on a wood heater, a spark arrestor stops embers leaving the flue.

Why does my fireplace smoke when it is windy?

Usually a downdraught — wind pushing back down the flue. An anti-downdraught cowl is the normal fix; we confirm the draw with a test before and after.

Can you fit a cap while sweeping?

Yes. If we are on the roof for a sweep and the flue needs a cap, we can quote it on the spot and fit it the same visit where we have the right size.
