Post-war chimneys were commonly flashed with a mortar fillet that cracks and lets water in. We remove it and install proper stepped flashing and counterflashing.
Post-war chimneys used softer commons behind a rendered or face-brick finish, and they fret badly once exposed. We replace the affected brickwork and make the top weathertight.
A retrofitted heater that puffs smoke into the room on lighting normally has an unsealed register plate or an oversized flue above it.
Render that sounds hollow when tapped has water behind it, and sealing over that traps the problem rather than fixing it.
A rendered post-war stack that is spalling and cracked is usually better stripped and restored than patched again.
Rebuilt above the roofline in durable brick with a cast crown, new cap and stepped flashing, so it is finished properly.
