Musty smell when the heating kicks in? That is the barrel fan, and it will not clear itself.
In a warm coastal city a split system is a cooling appliance that sits idle for half the year. In Canberra it is a year-round machine. It carries heating through a season that, on Bureau of Meteorology figures for Canberra Airport, includes 59 nights a year at or below 0°C and 92 days at or below 2°C, and then it carries cooling through 43 days at or above 30°C and ten at or above 35°C. Very few appliances in an Australian home work that hard.
The consequence is a cleaning problem most people never connect. In cooling mode the indoor coil runs below the dew point and condenses water, and that damp surface is where airborne dust, skin cells and cooking residue stick. Come autumn, the same unit switches to heating and drives warm air across everything that accumulated over summer. The musty smell that arrives with the first cold morning is not a heating fault. It is last summer, still in the barrel fan.
Canberra is also gaining split systems faster than most cities, and that is policy rather than fashion. New gas network connections in the ACT have been prevented since 8 December 2023, and the Government has committed to phasing out fossil fuel gas by 2045 at the latest. Electric reverse-cycle is the default in new Canberra housing and in a lot of retrofits — which means a growing number of ACT homes now depend on a head unit to get through a -5°C night.

Pulling the filters and rinsing them is maintenance, not cleaning. The material that causes odour and reduces output sits deeper — packed into the vanes of the barrel fan and matted across the face of the evaporator coil where summer condensation held it. Reaching it means stripping the front and the drip tray and washing the internals under pressure, which is the job we actually do.
A dirty coil and a loaded barrel fan cost you airflow, and airflow is output. In a mild climate you would barely notice. On a Canberra morning with the outside air below zero, a unit that has lost 20 per cent of its airflow simply cannot hold the room, so it runs flat out for hours and you pay for every minute. Most “my split system is not strong enough anymore” calls are this.
Every litre the coil condenses in summer has to leave the building. Blocked drain lines and fouled trays are the most common cause of a unit dripping down an internal wall, and they are also a standing reservoir of biofilm sitting inside your living room. We clear the line, flush the tray and check the fall properly rather than just wiping what is visible.
Canberra is one of the few Australian capitals where the outdoor unit routinely ices up. When ambient temperatures sit near or below freezing, a reverse-cycle system periodically reverses to melt frost off the outdoor coil. A coil packed with dust, grass clippings or leaf litter defrosts poorly and cycles more often, which shows up as a unit that blows cold in the middle of heating. We clean the outdoor unit as part of the service.
A lot of newer Canberra housing — the City, Braddon, Kingston, Bruce and the Gungahlin town centre — is apartment stock running multi-head systems with no gas at all. Those units are typically the only heating and cooling in the dwelling, they are often on a body-corporate maintenance gap, and they are frequently the least-serviced equipment in the building. We service them individually and photograph each head.
Canberra houses shut up tight from April to October, which is precisely when the split system is recirculating indoor air hardest. Whatever is in that air — dust, dander, wood-heater particulate drifting in from outside — passes through the head unit repeatedly. A clean unit is doing filtration work all winter; a dirty one is doing redistribution.
