Cottesloe fireplaces are not everyday heating — they are what gets lit when a winter front comes through off the Indian Ocean and the house that felt perfect in February suddenly feels like a glass box. Between the surviving interwar bungalows, the limestone homes near Napoleon Street and the large rebuilt houses along and behind Marine Parade, there is a substantial population of open fires and wood heaters that run hard for a few months and sit idle for the rest of the year.
