Colonial Masonry in a Salt-Air Town

Fremantle kept its nineteenth-century streetscape in a way almost nowhere else in Western Australia managed. Behind the West End’s limestone and brick facades, and through the cottage rows of South Fremantle, Beaconsfield and White Gum Valley, there is a large surviving population of original chimneys — built for open fires and colonial-era stoves, many of them never lined, most of them still standing on the roof whether or not the fireplace below is still used.

The local complication is exposure. These stacks sit high on the roof of a town that faces the Indian Ocean directly, and the prevailing wind arrives loaded with salt. Salt draws moisture into porous limestone and soft lime-mortared brickwork, and that cycle of wetting and drying pushes joints out from the inside. What we find on Fremantle roofs is a familiar sequence: eroded mortar high on the stack where the weather bites hardest, spalling on the seaward face, flashing that has been patched at least once, and a stack that has begun to move.

We sweep contained, camera any flue whose history is unknown before it is used, and repoint and rebuild in a mortar suited to soft historic masonry rather than hard modern cement, which does more damage than it prevents.
