Few Australian suburbs have kept their 19th-century character the way North Adelaide has. The bluestone and sandstone villas of Brougham Place, the two-storey terraces near Wellington Square and the tight cottage rows behind Melbourne Street were all built with multiple fireplaces as standard, and a remarkable number of those fireplaces and stacks survive largely intact.

Age is what defines the work. These chimneys were built with lime mortar, are almost never lined, and often carry more than one flue in a single stack serving different rooms. After well over a century, the pattern we find is consistent: creosote sitting directly on the brick and stone, mortar joints that have washed out high on the stack where the weather hits hardest, and lead flashing that has been patched at least once and is now the real source of a damp patch on a bedroom ceiling.
