Behind the Lonsdale Street strip, Braddon’s original cottages still have their brick chimneys — many unlined, most never inspected. FreshDuct sweeps, inspects and repairs them properly.
Open fire in an original Braddon cottage? Have the flue camera-checked before winter.
Redevelopment along Lonsdale Street has changed how Braddon looks without changing what is inside its older houses. Walk two streets back and the interwar and immediate post-war cottages are still there, still on their original footprints, and a great many still have the brick chimney they were built with. Those chimneys were designed for a household that lit a fire most winter evenings, and in a climate where that made complete sense.
It still does. Bureau of Meteorology averages for Canberra Airport put the mean overnight minimum below or at freezing through July and under about three and a half degrees from May right through to September — colder overnight than any other Australian capital. Braddon fireplaces get used. What has changed is that the flue above them has now gone several decades without a sweep, has often been re-roofed around at least once, and in a lot of these houses was never lined to begin with.
That is the job we do here. We camera the full run before quoting, sweep contained with drop sheets, and tell you plainly whether what we found is fine, needs a liner, needs repointing, or means the fireplace should stay decorative. Every visit comes back with dated before and after photographs.
The things we look at first on a Braddon chimney — based on the local housing and conditions.
Many original inner-north flues were built without a liner. Mortar joints degrade from the inside where you cannot see them, and cracks let heat and combustion gases into the wall cavity. A camera inspection is the only honest way to know.
ACT Government reporting identifies wood heater smoke as the main cause of Canberra’s winter air pollution, which tells you how much solid fuel is genuinely burned here. Heavy seasonal use means real creosote, and creosote is what chimney fires are made of.
Braddon houses have been re-roofed, extended and had solar added. Chimney flashing and terminations are routinely disturbed during that work and rarely made good properly, which is where the leak into the ceiling usually starts.

The three things we find most often in an original inner-north flue are a bird or possum nest, degraded parging where the mortar has fallen away inside, and a top that was capped or rendered during a re-roof so it no longer draws. None of them are visible from the fireplace.
None are especially expensive to fix once you know which one you have. What costs money is lighting a fire on top of them for another winter and finding out the hard way.

You generally cannot tell from the fireplace, and a lot of interwar inner-north chimneys were built unlined. We run a camera the full height of the flue and show you the footage. If it is unlined but sound we will tell you that too — unlined does not automatically mean unusable.
Occasional use is actually the pattern that causes trouble, because slow smouldering fires deposit more creosote than hot ones and the flue sits unused long enough for birds to nest in it. An annual inspection before the season is the sensible minimum even for light use.
