Gungahlin has few traditional chimneys, but plenty of freestanding wood heaters, outdoor fireplaces and pizza oven flues. FreshDuct services all of them — and says so honestly.
Freestanding heater with a metal flue? It needs sweeping just as much as a brick chimney.
We will be straightforward about this: Gungahlin is not a brick-chimney district. It was developed from the 1990s onwards, largely without solid-fuel heating as standard, and the newest estates were built all-electric with no gas connection at all under ACT Government policy. If you are looking for the century-old masonry work we do in Ainslie or Kingston, you will not find much of it here.
What Gungahlin does have is a growing amount of a different kind of flue work. Freestanding wood heaters are a popular addition to newer homes as a feature and a backup, and those use prefabricated twin-wall insulated flue systems running up through the roof rather than masonry. Outdoor fireplaces, wood-fired pizza ovens and outdoor kitchens have become common in the estates, and all of them have flues that accumulate deposits. The town centre’s food businesses add commercial appliance and oven flues on top.
All of it needs the same attention a traditional chimney does, and often gets less because it does not look like a chimney. Prefabricated flues accumulate creosote in exactly the same way, their joints and seals degrade, and their roof penetration flashing kits are a genuine water entry path if fitted or aged badly. We sweep them, inspect the full run, check the roof penetration and the required clearances to combustibles, and photograph the result.
The things we look at first on a Gungahlin chimney — based on the local housing and conditions.
Prefabricated insulated flues accumulate creosote just as masonry ones do, and their sections rely on correctly seated joints. They need sweeping and inspecting on the same schedule, not less often because they look modern.
A metal flue passes through the roof via a flashing kit, and that kit is the water path if it was fitted poorly or has aged. We check it from the roof at every service, because the resulting leak is usually blamed on the roof rather than the flue.
Outdoor fireplaces and wood-fired ovens are common through the Gungahlin estates and are almost never serviced. They build deposits, their flues block, and being outdoors does not make a flue fire less of a problem.

A twin-wall stainless flue looks nothing like a brick chimney and behaves, chemically, exactly the same. Burn wood in it and creosote accumulates in proportion to how cool and slow you burn.
The differences that matter are mechanical: seated joints, correct clearances to combustible framing, and a sound roof penetration. We check all three at every service, and photograph the roof penetration since nobody else ever looks at it.
FreshDuct services flues throughout Gungahlin 7 days a week — freestanding wood heaters, outdoor fireplaces and pizza ovens across the estates, plus commercial appliance flues in the town centre.
Ngunnawal and Amaroo adjoin Gungahlin with Belconnen and Kaleen south-west, so a booking here can usually be grouped with nearby work.

Yes, on the same schedule as a masonry chimney. Creosote accumulates according to how you burn rather than what the flue is made of. We sweep the full run, check that the sections are correctly seated, verify clearances to combustible framing and inspect the roof penetration flashing from outside.
Yes, and they are among the most neglected flues we see. Outdoor fireplaces and wood-fired ovens build deposits and their flues block with debris and nests. We clean the flue, check the termination and inspect the structure, and it is generally quick and inexpensive work.
