Most Melbourne homes built or renovated between the late 1990s and the mid-2010s were fitted with 12 volt halogen downlights. Each one runs hot, each one has its own transformer sitting on the ceiling, and each one needs a clear zone around it in the roof space because insulation cannot touch it. Multiply that by fifteen or twenty fittings and the ceiling is full of holes that heat pours through in summer and out through in winter.
A modern LED downlight is not just a cooler lamp in the same can. The good ones are integrated, sealed units rated IC-4 – the classification under the Australian recessed-luminaire standard that means the fitting can be touched and covered by insulation and does not let air move between the room and the roof space. Fit those and the insulation goes over the whole ceiling, edge to edge, with nothing to work around. That is the difference between a ceiling that looks insulated and one that actually is.
It is also why we fit IC-4 as standard rather than as an upgrade. The cheaper IC fitting can be covered too, but it is not sealed; the older non-IC fittings that still sit in a lot of ceilings cannot be covered at all. If a downlight is being replaced, it should be replaced once, with the fitting that solves the problem.
Halogen to LED swap. The common job. The old can and its transformer come out, the same 90 mm cut-out and the same cable are reused where they are in good condition, and an integrated IC-4 LED goes in. No new holes, no patching, and the ceiling is ready to be insulated over the same day.
Replacing failed LEDs. Integrated LEDs do not have a lamp to change; when the driver or the light engine fails, the fitting is replaced. We match the cut-out and the colour temperature of the fittings around it so the room stays even, and we tell you if a run of failures points at a wiring or dimmer issue rather than the lights themselves.
New downlights. A renovated kitchen, a living room that was only ever lit by a single pendant, a hallway or a home office. We plan the layout on the ceiling before a single hole is cut: spacing from the walls, task lighting over benches and desks, separate switching where it makes sense, and dimming where you want it. Then the fittings go in, the switching is wired, and the ceiling is photographed finished.
Every job is carried out by a licensed electrician. If you are also insulating, or thinking about it, tell us – the downlights are the first half of that job and we do both.
Colour temperature. Warm white suits living rooms and bedrooms; cool white suits kitchens, laundries and garages; most good fittings are switchable between three colours at install so you can change your mind later. We set every fitting in a room to the same setting – a mixed ceiling is the most common thing we are asked to fix.
Spacing. Downlights throw a cone. The fittings are placed so the cones overlap at the height you live at, not at the ceiling, which usually means fewer fittings placed better rather than more fittings placed in a row. A bench, a desk or a reading chair gets its own light; a hallway gets a single line.
Dimming. LEDs dim well only when the fitting and the dimmer are matched. We fit trailing-edge dimmers designed for LED loads, so there is no flicker at the bottom of the range and no buzz. Smart, app-controlled fittings are an option in the rooms where you would use them; we will not sell them to you for a laundry.
Bathrooms. Fittings above a shower or bath need the right ingress rating for the zone they sit in, and they pair naturally with an exhaust fan upgrade – steam is the enemy of both the fitting and the ceiling. We do both trades in the one visit.
From 1 October 2026 the Victorian Energy Upgrades ceiling-insulation discount opens to every home in Victoria. One of the conditions is that the ceiling has no downlights that are not IC or IC-4 rated. In plain terms: a ceiling full of old halogens cannot be insulated under the program until the fittings are changed.
We fit the IC-4 LEDs first, then the insulation is laid over the whole ceiling. You can fit LED lamps into some halogen holders, but the old transformer usually stays, the fitting is still not sealed or rated for insulation contact, and compatibility problems cause flicker. Replacing the whole fitting with an integrated IC-4 LED solves all three and is what we recommend when the ceiling is being insulated.
It is the classification for a recessed downlight that insulation may touch and cover, and that is sealed so air does not move between the room and the roof space. IC alone means it can be covered but is not sealed. Non-IC fittings must be kept clear of insulation altogether.
No. In Victoria, replacing or installing a hard-wired downlight is electrical work and must be done by a licensed electrician. It is also a safety issue: the roof space is where old transformers, insulation and heat meet.
Fewer than most people expect. Fittings are spaced so their light cones overlap at living height – roughly half the ceiling height apart and half that in from the walls – with a dedicated fitting over any bench or desk. A 4 by 5 metre living room is usually six, not twelve.
Yes, when the fitting is IC or IC-4 rated – and every fitting we install is IC-4. If you are booking ceiling insulation with us, the downlights are done first so the batts can run edge to edge.
Not for homes at the moment – the Victorian program stopped residential lighting incentives in early 2023. There is a Victorian discount for ceiling insulation from 1 October 2026, and a ceiling with non-IC downlights is not eligible for it, which is one more reason to change the fittings first.
Recessed fittings need a cavity above them. On an apartment slab we fit surface-mounted LED downlights that give the same look without cutting into the concrete, or run a small bulkhead where a cluster of fittings is wanted.
Often not – older dimmers were designed for halogen loads and cause flicker or buzzing with LEDs. We fit a trailing-edge LED dimmer matched to the fittings, and tell you which rooms are worth dimming at all.
A like-for-like swap of ten to fifteen fittings is usually a morning or an afternoon. New points with switching take longer; the office gives you the time when they confirm the price.
