A healthy exhaust fan is barely audible. Rattling, humming, grinding and flapping are each a different fault with a different fix – and most of them get cheaper the earlier you act. We diagnose by ear, confirm on the spot, and end the noise the same visit in most cases.

Sydney’s problem is humidity, and it does not switch off in winter. Air that is already carrying moisture cannot absorb much more, so a shower in a Sydney bathroom leaves the room wet for longer than the same shower in a drier city – and an underperforming fan has far less margin before mould appears.
The second factor is density. A huge share of Sydney bathrooms sit in apartments with no window at all, extracting through a shared riser that serves the whole stack. Usually one of three things: the mounting has worked loose after years of vibration, debris has landed in the blades, or the blade assembly is out of balance from caked dust. All are quick fixes – and all get worse if ignored, because vibration loosens everything around it.
A straining motor – typically a failing start capacitor or a bearing beginning to seize. Switch it off at the wall until it is looked at: a stalled, humming motor overheats fast.
Grinding is bearings, and bearings do not heal. Caught early it may be serviceable; left long enough the honest answer becomes replacement – from $250 as a complete job. Either way you will get the real answer, not the expensive one.
That is the backdraft damper – the flap that stops outside air blowing back in. When it breaks or sticks it slaps in the wind. Fixing it stops the noise and the cold draughts that come through a fan with a failed damper.
Often not. Wind can flip or jam the damper, drive debris into the discharge point, or shift ducting in the roof. Possums and birds getting into roof spaces after storms is also a genuinely common cause of new fan noise.
