A reverse-cycle Daikin heats the house by pulling warmth out of the outside air. On a cold, damp Melbourne morning frost forms on the outdoor coil, so every so often the system pauses, reverses for a few minutes to melt it off, and the indoor fan goes quiet. Steam rising from the outdoor unit while it does is normal.
It is not normal when the ice never clears, the outdoor unit ends up wrapped in a solid block, or defrosts come so often the house never warms. Usual causes are low refrigerant, a faulty outdoor sensor, a slowing outdoor fan motor, or melt water that cannot drain from under the unit and refreezes. Cold air on heat mode long after a defrost points elsewhere, often to the reversing valve that switches between heating and cooling. The technician measures before naming any of them. Our guide to a split system not heating has the checks worth doing first.
