Rinnai, installed in Melbourne

Rinnai split system installation in Melbourne, backed by a seven-year warranty

Rinnai Australia is headquartered in Braeside, in Melbourne’s south-east, and its wall splits carry a published seven-year parts and labour warranty that starts the day the install is finished. We install the Rinnai series that suits your room – from a 2.5 kW bedroom unit to a 9 kW living-area unit – with licensed electricians and ARC-licensed technicians, and we tell you which series is actually worth paying for.

Why people call about Rinnai in the first place

Tick two or more and it is time to book — every one of these gets worse, never better, on its own.

A Rinnai gas wall heater warms the lounge but nothing cools it in February
You want the longest manufacturer warranty you can get without going to a premium brand
The retailer listed five Rinnai series and could not explain the difference
You want Wi-Fi and voice control but do not want to pay for a human sensor you will never use
Two bedrooms and a study need cooling and you are not sure whether that is three units or one
A Brivis ducted heater does the winter and you want summer sorted room by room
The last installer was gone before the unit was even run in heating mode
You have heard the word rebate and want a straight answer on whether it applies to you

Why Rinnai comes up in Melbourne conversations

Rinnai is a heating name in this city. Rinnai Australia’s head office is in Braeside, and its gas heaters – and the Brivis ducted heaters it now sells under the Rinnai umbrella – are a familiar sight in Melbourne homes. That is why Rinnai splits come up so often: a household already has a Rinnai or Brivis heater, it is looking for cooling, and the brand it trusts for winter also sells reverse cycle.

That familiarity is worth something, but it is not the reason to buy. The reasons are on Rinnai’s own site: a published seven-year parts and labour warranty on its residential refrigerated air conditioning, effective from the date the installation is completed; a wall-split line-up that runs from 2.5 kW to 9 kW across several series; energy ratings of up to 9 stars on selected series; and multi split outdoor units that run up to six indoor units.

The gas-heater connection has a second edge. If you are replacing a gas wall heater with a reverse cycle split, the Victorian Energy Upgrades program may apply an upfront discount – provided the specific model is on the VEU product register and the old heater is properly decommissioned, with the gas line capped by a licensed gasfitter. FreshDuct arranges that discount through our accredited installation partners, and the office checks the model against the register before it quotes. If the discount does not apply to your situation, we say so. Our VEU discount page explains the scenarios.

The Rinnai wall-split series, and how to choose between them

Rinnai publishes several wall-mounted series, and the differences are real rather than cosmetic. Here is what the official site says about each, and who it suits.

PX Series (2.5 to 8 kW): up to 7 star energy efficiency, Wi-Fi and voice control, an ECO+ mode that picks the operating mode for you, a human sensor and a turbo mode. The all-rounder for a living room that gets used all day.

TX Series (2.5 to 9 kW): quiet operation, HEPA air filtration, humidity control, Wi-Fi and voice control, and the largest wall-split capacity Rinnai lists. The pick for open-plan areas and for anyone with dust or hay-fever complaints.

VX Series (2.5 to 7 kW): up to 6.5 stars, long-distance airflow up to 12 metres, a self-cleaning function and quiet operation. Suits long rooms where the unit has to throw air the length of the space.

PB Series (2.6 to 8 kW): up to 6.5 stars, Wi-Fi control, demand-response function and quiet operation. The straightforward bedroom and study unit.

JX, J and T Series (2.5 to 8 kW): Rinnai’s up-to-9-star units with airflow to 10 metres. The T has Wi-Fi, voice control and a demand-response function; the JX and J are listed as exclusive to one retail chain, so we install those when you have bought one.

Which series we can supply on the day changes with stock, so the office confirms availability with your quote. Rinnai also sells cooling-only units for the Northern Territory, northern Queensland and Western Australia – not for Melbourne. Every unit we install here heats as well as cools.

Seven years, from the day the install is finished

Rinnai’s air conditioning warranty booklet sets the residential refrigerated warranty at seven years parts and seven years labour, running from the date of completion of installation, not the date of purchase. Several conditions in that booklet decide whether it holds, and two of them are about installation.

First, the product must be installed by a qualified installer in line with the applicable regulations. Damage or failure resulting from improper installation is excluded. Second, pipe work, control wiring and any added components are the installer’s responsibility, not Rinnai’s – so the standard of the pipe run, the brazing, the vacuum and the electrical connection is what you are relying on for the next seven years.

That is why the install matters more on a Rinnai than the badge does. Our crews run the refrigerant lines in a duct cover, pressure test and vacuum them before the valves are opened, connect the unit through a licensed electrician on a circuit rated for it, and run the unit in both heating and cooling before they leave. You get photos of the indoor unit, the outdoor unit and the pipe run. Keep those with your tax invoice – the booklet names the tax invoice or receipt as your proof of purchase, and asks for proof of the date the install was completed – and a claim in year six starts with the paperwork in order. Rinnai also offers an extended-warranty option on selected products through its Service Advantage program; that one needs online registration within the first twelve months of installation and scheduled servicing by Rinnai, and the booklet lists the products it covers.

One room or the whole house: single, multi or ducted

Rinnai sells multi split systems as well as single wall splits – one outdoor unit running up to six indoor units – which raises the question we get asked most on this brand: three bedrooms and a study – three outdoor units, one multi, or ducted?

Singles are the simplest install per room, run independently, and if one fails the others keep going. In a weatherboard or brick veneer with rooms on external walls, three back-to-back singles are often the right answer.

A multi split puts one outdoor unit on the wall or the slab and runs pipe to several indoor units. It suits a narrow block, an apartment balcony or a townhouse where there is only one sensible place for a condenser. The rule is that the indoor units are sized so they are not all running flat out on the same afternoon, and that the outdoor unit is positioned where its noise bothers nobody. Our single versus multi-head guide works through the trade-offs.

Ducted reverse cycle is the answer when the whole house needs conditioning and there is roof space to run it – especially where a Brivis ducted gas heater is coming out. That is a different job; see our ducted reverse cycle page.

Tell the office how many rooms, which walls are external and where the outdoor unit could go, and it will suggest the layout before the quote. Long after the install, we service and clean Rinnai splits too – cleaning and filter work, not warranty repairs, which the booklet reserves for Rinnai’s authorised service representatives. See split system cleaning.

A split system is two boxes joined by two copper lines and a drain. The refrigerant in those lines moves heat rather than making it: out of the house in summer, into the house in winter. The drain carries the condensation the indoor unit collects outside.

A single split is one outdoor unit and one indoor head for one room. A multi split runs several heads – here three rooms – off one outdoor unit, so the outside of the house carries one box instead of three, and each room still keeps its own remote and setting.

How it works

From a phone call to a Rinnai on the wall

1. Tell us the room and the heater

How big the room is, which wall, and whether a gas heater is coming out. The office gives you a free estimate over the phone.

2. Series, price, then a time

The office names the series, checks any VEU discount against the register, confirms the price and books a window, 7 days a week.

3. Installed and run in both modes

Units mounted, lines vacuumed and connected, electrician on the circuit, old heater decommissioned if there is one, unit tested heating and cooling.

4. Photos, then you pay

You see the finished install, keep the photos for the warranty file, and pay only after the job.

Straight answers

Rinnai installation questions, answered straight

How long is the warranty on a Rinnai split system?

Rinnai’s published warranty on residential refrigerated air conditioning is seven years parts and seven years labour, running from the date the installation is completed. It requires installation by a qualified installer in line with the regulations, and excludes failures caused by faulty installation – so who installs it matters.

Is Rinnai a Melbourne company?

Rinnai Australia is headquartered in Braeside, in Melbourne’s south-east, and its site offers product support and service booking from here. The brand itself is international. For you it means local support and parts, and a warranty that applies to products installed in Australia.

Which Rinnai series is the quietest?

Rinnai lists quiet operation as a feature of the TX, VX and PB series. The TX adds HEPA filtration and humidity control; the VX adds a self-cleaning function and long-throw airflow. For a bedroom, the PB is the simple choice; the office will confirm which is available when it quotes.

Do Rinnai splits have Wi-Fi and voice control?

Most of the current series do. Rinnai lists Wi-Fi and voice control on the PX, TX, VX, J and T series and Wi-Fi control on the PB. We pair the unit to your home network on the day and show you the app before we leave.

Can I get the VEU discount replacing my Rinnai gas heater with a Rinnai split?

Possibly. The discount depends on the old gas heater being decommissioned and the new model being on the VEU product register – the brand alone does not qualify it. The office checks the exact model before quoting. We arrange the discount through our accredited installation partners, and a minimum co-payment always applies.

What sizes do Rinnai wall splits come in?

From 2.5 kW up to 9 kW depending on the series – 2.5 and 3.5 kW for bedrooms and studies, 5 to 7 kW for living rooms, 8 and 9 kW for open-plan areas. We size to the room’s real load, not the floor area, using the same bands as our sizing guide.

Can one Rinnai outdoor unit run several rooms?

Yes – Rinnai sells multi split systems that connect up to six indoor units to one outdoor unit, with wall-mounted, ducted, cassette and floor-console heads to choose from. They suit homes with one sensible spot for a condenser. Where the rooms sit on external walls, separate singles are often cheaper to install and keep running independently. The office suggests the layout before it quotes.

Do I need to register a Rinnai warranty?

The standard seven-year warranty does not depend on registration; it relies on your proof of purchase and proof of the date the install was completed, so keep the tax invoice with our install photos. Rinnai’s Service Advantage program adds an extended-warranty option on selected products, and that one does require online registration within the first twelve months and scheduled servicing by Rinnai; the warranty booklet lists which products it covers.

How long does a Rinnai installation take?

A single back-to-back unit is usually a morning. A long pipe run, an upper-storey room, a new circuit at the switchboard, or a gas heater decommissioning on the same visit adds time. A multi split with three or four heads is a full day. The office gives you the time with the price.

The Rinnai seven-year warranty

Rinnai publishes a seven-year parts and labour warranty on its residential refrigerated air conditioning, effective from the completion of installation and conditional on installation by a qualified installer in line with the regulations. Pipe work and wiring are the installer's responsibility under that booklet, which is why the install matters. Our photos and your tax invoice are the file that makes a claim simple.

Choosing between Rinnai series
