Sydney’s problem is humidity, and it does not switch off in winter. The shortcut we will not take: venting into the roof cavity. It is the cheapest path and the most expensive mistake – it relocates your bathroom’s moisture into the one space you never inspect, where it condenses on timber and insulation and grows mould you cannot see. Size beats brand. Extraction capacity is measured in cubic metres per hour, and the fan must match the room: a powerful ensuite fan is wasted in a toilet, and a toilet fan in a family bathroom is why the mirror never clears. We calculate it from the room, not from what is on special.
Controls do the remembering. A run-on timer keeps extracting for the minutes after your shower when most of the moisture is still airborne. A humidity sensor switches the fan on before the mirror fogs and off when the room is dry – the set-and-forget answer for kids’ bathrooms and rentals. Both can be added to a fan you already own, and both remove the one variable no fan can control: whether anyone remembers to switch it on.
