First, the name. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi Electric are two separate companies with two separate air conditioning ranges, sold and supported by different Australian distributors. MHI’s Australian site presents three wall-mounted series. Ciara is the compact one: MHI describes it as compact and lightweight, with a rounded Italian design, built-in Wi-Fi and voice control compatibility, and a back-lit remote. It is the head we reach for when a bedroom or study has one usable wall and the unit has to disappear into it. Avanti and Bronte are MHI’s other two wall-mounted ranges. Which of them suits a medium or a large living area depends on the current line-up, which is exactly what the office checks with the supplier before it quotes.

What is consistent across the ranges, as MHI states on its own site, is built-in Wi-Fi control from a smartphone, an allergen clean filter that captures and neutralises airborne allergens, and reduced noise levels. Those three things are why people ask for MHI by name.

MHI describes its systems as engineered to perform in Australia’s toughest conditions, from scorching summers to icy winters. In Melbourne the winter half of that sentence is the one that gets tested. A reverse cycle split pulls heat from outside air even when that air is close to freezing, and on a frosty Melbourne morning it will run a short defrost cycle now and then, pausing to clear ice from the outdoor coil. What capacity, and what was it based on? Floor area alone is not enough. West-facing glass, a raked ceiling and an uninsulated 1960s brick veneer all push the figure up. The office should be able to tell you what it assumed.

Where will the outdoor unit sit? Back-to-back on the other side of the wall is the simplest and least expensive configuration. If it cannot be, you should hear that before the quote, not on the day.
