Mitsubishi Electric’s Australian range is easiest to read by the room each series was built for. The MSZ-AP Mini is a 2.0 kW unit only 250 mm high – the one for a study, a nursery or a bedroom whose window head leaves no room for a full-height unit. The MSZ-AP series is the mid-range workhorse in 2.5, 3.5, 4.2, 5.0, 6.0, 7.1 and 7.8 kW, with Mitsubishi Electric’s Dual Barrier Coating inside and a Night Mode that dims the lights, silences the beeps and drops the outdoor unit’s noise by up to 3 dB.
The MSZ-EF is the slim-line one, 2.5 to 5.0 kW in three colour finishes, rated by Mitsubishi Electric at 21 dB in quiet mode – a fit for a period front room where the unit will be seen. The MSZ-LN is the premium filtration model, 2.5 to 6.0 kW, with the Plasma Quad Plus filter, a 3D i-See sensor that reads where people are in the room, and built-in Wi-Fi. The MSZ-GS covers 2.5 to 7.8 kW as the simpler unit with a quick-clean design and a blue fin anti-corrosion coil, and the MSZ-AS90 is the 9.0 kW single wall unit for a large open-plan living area. Cooling-only versions exist in the MSY-GW and MSY-GY90.
All run on R32 and, apart from the cooling-only models, all are reverse cycle. We confirm the exact model codes with the supplier on the day the office quotes, and our sizing guide explains how the kilowatts are matched to the room.
Melbourne’s newer subdivisions and its older subdivided blocks share a problem: the side setback is a metre wide and the neighbour’s bedroom is on the other side of the fence. Victoria’s residential noise rules cover air conditioners, and a condenser fixed to that side wall is the most common cause of a neighbour complaint we hear about. It is also the reason Mitsubishi Electric is asked for by name: the MSZ-AP25 is rated as low as 18 dB(A) indoors on heating in quiet mode, and Night Mode cuts the outdoor unit by up to 3 dB when it matters.
Quiet equipment is half the answer; placement is the other half. Before we drill anything we walk the outside of the house with you and pick the spot: a rear wall or a slab in the back yard where the fan does not face a neighbour’s window, a bracket high enough to clear garden beds, and enough clearance on the inlet side that the unit does not recirculate its own hot air. A longer pipe run on a rear wall is often the better job than a short back-to-back run on the side boundary, and we will tell you when it is.

Mitsubishi Electric fits the MSZ-AP series with what it calls Dual Barrier Coating, a treatment on the fan and internal surfaces that the maker says reduces the build-up of dust and greasy dirt. For a unit in an open-plan room that shares its air with the kitchen, that is genuinely useful – grease is what turns a light dust layer into a black film on the barrel fan. The MSZ-GS takes a different route with a quick-clean design, and the MSZ-LN adds the Plasma Quad Plus filter for households that care about what is in the air as much as how cold it is.
None of that removes the need to clean. We install these units and we also strip and wash them, so we will say plainly what the coating does not do: it does not stop the coil fouling, it does not clear a blocked condensate drain, and it does not clean the filters. Before we leave we show you where the filters clip out and how often to rinse them. Wi-Fi. The MSZ-LN has Wi-Fi built in. The MSZ-AP is Wi-Fi capable, but Mitsubishi Electric’s own MSZ-AP page says app control requires the installation of an additional MAC-568IF-E Wi-Fi controller for each indoor unit – the piece people are sold and never fit. If you want to switch the bedroom on from the car, tell us and we supply the adapter, fit it and pair the app before we leave.
Heating. Every reverse cycle model in the range heats as well as cools; on the MSZ-AP the rated heating capacities run from 3.2 kW to 9.0 kW across the sizes. That comfortably replaces a gas wall heater in a Melbourne lounge, and if the gas heater is decommissioned the job may attract a Victorian Energy Upgrades discount, which we arrange through our accredited installation partners. The questions worth asking. Is the run back-to-back or does the pipe need to travel, because the quote changes when it does. Is there a spare way on the switchboard for the dedicated circuit a licensed electrician must run. Is the wall brick veneer, double brick or weatherboard, because each is drilled and sealed differently. We ask all of these on the phone so that the price the office confirms is the price you pay.
