Panasonic split system installation Melbourne: cleaner air, quieter rooms

Panasonic Australia sells three reverse cycle wall-mounted ranges for single rooms, plus a cooling-only line. Knowing the difference is most of the decision.

HZ series — ultra premium. The flagship, listed at 2.5, 3.5, 5.0, 7.1 and 8.0 kW cooling. It carries nanoe X air purification, built-in Wi-Fi with the Panasonic Comfort Cloud app, AEROWINGS airflow and iAUTO-X with a humidity sensor that holds the room below 60 per cent relative humidity. This is the one for the main bedroom or a living room where air quality matters as much as temperature.

Z series — premium. Six sizes from 2.5 kW to 7.1 kW, with 4.2 and 6.0 kW steps in between that the HZ skips. It keeps nanoe X, built-in Wi-Fi, AEROWINGS and iAUTO-X, and it is the range we quote most often for Melbourne bedrooms and living areas.

RZ series — standard. The value option and the widest range, from 2.5 kW up to 8.0 and 9.5 kW models for large open-plan spaces. No nanoe X, but an anti-bacterial filter, a POWERFUL mode for fast cooling, Quiet mode, AEROWINGS and the same inverter and R32 refrigerant as the premium ranges. Whether app control is built in or fitted as an adaptor varies by RZ model, so the office confirms it for the unit it quotes.

U series — cooling only. Listed from 2.5 to 8.0 kW, for a room that already has heating and only needs summer covered.

Panasonic’s point of difference is nanoe X, its air purification technology built into the HZ and Z ranges. Panasonic states that nanoe X inhibits adhered and airborne pollutants and reduces odours, that it works on surfaces and soft furnishings as well as the air, and that it can run with or without heating or cooling switched on. Panasonic also states that nanoe X has been approved under the National Asthma Council Australia’s Sensitive Choice program.

For a Melbourne household, that matters in two seasons. Spring, when the plane trees and grasses set half the city sneezing and bedroom windows stay shut. And winter, when a closed-up house with a dehumidifier running in the corner starts to smell of damp. A unit that treats the air in the room while it heats it is a different proposition from a unit that only moves the air around.

We are straight about what it does not do. nanoe X does not clean the unit itself. The indoor coil, the fan barrel and the drain tray still collect dust and biofilm, and a split system that is not cleaned will blow that back into the room whatever purification it carries. Every Panasonic we install comes with the same advice we give on our Panasonic service guide: rinse the filters yourself through summer, and have the unit professionally cleaned when it starts to smell or the airflow drops. We do that too, so the install and the upkeep sit with one company.

Most Melbourne homes built since the 1990s have one big room for living, dining and cooking. The problem is rarely capacity. It is throw — getting cooled air to the far end without a wind tunnel at the near end.

Panasonic’s answer is AEROWINGS: two independently controlled flaps that concentrate the airflow and push it further. Panasonic states an air distance of up to 15 metres on the HZ ultra premium, and up to 25 metres on the RZ series. iAUTO-X drives the compressor to full frequency from start-up for faster cooling, and ECO Mode with A.I. Control then backs the unit off to hold the temperature without the swing you feel from a basic inverter.

Where we put the head still decides whether any of that works. On a long room the unit goes on the short wall, throwing down the length, never over the kitchen bench where the range hood fights it. On a room with a raked ceiling it sits lower than you would expect so the warm air in winter is pushed down to where you are. We walk the room with you before the wall is drilled, and the office will tell you plainly if the room needs the 7.1, the 8.0 or the 9.5 kW RZ rather than the 5.0 you were hoping for.

Panasonic also states its outdoor units are tested for salty air, dust and humidity. For bayside suburbs from Williamstown round to Frankston that matters, and we still mount the condenser off the ground and out of the weather.

A single-head Panasonic is usually a morning or an afternoon when the outdoor unit can sit back-to-back with the indoor head on an external wall. The head goes on a levelled wall plate fixed into studs or masonry, the pipe run passes straight through the wall, and the condenser goes on a galvanised bracket or a slab at ground level, wherever it is quietest for you and your neighbour.

Brick veneer and weatherboard are the easy walls. Double brick and period solid-brick homes need a core drill and a longer visit. Internal walls mean a longer pipe run in a duct cover, and the quote changes to say so before the day, not after.

The electrical side is done by a licensed electrician: a dedicated circuit from the switchboard where one is needed, an isolator beside the outdoor unit, and the unit tested under load. The refrigeration side is done by an ARC-licensed technician: the lines are pressure-tested, evacuated with a vacuum pump and gauged before the valves are opened, which is the step that decides whether the compressor lasts.

Then commissioning. We run heating and cooling, check the condensate drain actually drains, set the Wi-Fi up on the HZ and Z so Comfort Cloud is working on your phone before we leave, and photograph the finished job inside and out. Panasonic publishes a 5-year warranty covering its residential air conditioners, and a documented, licensed install is what keeps that intact.
