A split system is two boxes and everything between them. The indoor head sits high on an internal wall. The outdoor unit sits on a bracket or a slab outside. Between them run two insulated copper pipes, a drain line, a control cable and the power. The quality of the job lives in that middle part, which is why the lowest quote is rarely the same job.
Supply and install, as one price. We supply the unit from any of the eleven brands below, fit the wall plate, hang the head, mount the outdoor unit on a galvanised bracket or a level slab, run the pipes in a neat duct cover, and take the condensate drain to a garden bed or a drain, never onto a path. The refrigerant lines are pressure-tested and pulled into a deep vacuum before the valves are opened. That step is what stops a brand-new unit losing capacity in its first summer.
The electrical side. Most new installs need their own dedicated circuit from the switchboard. A licensed electrician runs it, fits the isolator beside the outdoor unit and tests the lot. If the board is full or old, you hear about it on the phone, not on the day.
Commissioning. The unit is run in heating and cooling, the temperatures are checked at the outlet, the controller is set up and you are shown how to use it. Then the photos are taken and you pay.
Sizing is where installs most often go wrong, and it goes wrong in both directions. Too small and the unit runs flat out on a 38 degree day and never gets there. Too big and it short-cycles, the room feels clammy and the compressor wears early. The right size depends on the floor area, the ceiling height, which way the windows face, how much glass there is and whether the walls and ceiling are insulated.

As a starting point only: a bedroom or small room usually lands around 2.0 to 3.5 kW, a medium room 3.5 to 5.0 kW, and a large open-plan living area 5.0 to 8.0 kW. A west-facing living room with a wall of glass in a 1970s brick veneer needs more than the floor area suggests. A well-insulated bedroom in a new estate needs less.
Heating matters as much as cooling here. Melbourne winters are long, and a reverse cycle split is the lowest-cost way to heat a room that most homes have. A back-to-back install is the simplest and quickest: the indoor head on an external wall, the outdoor unit directly behind it, and a pipe run of a few metres. Many single-storey brick veneer and weatherboard homes can be done this way. When the head has to sit on an internal wall, the outdoor unit has to go around a corner or up to a first floor, the pipe run gets longer and the quote changes. The office asks the right questions so the estimate is honest.
Replacing an old unit is a different job from a new one. The old refrigerant has to be recovered by a licensed technician, the old unit removed and recycled, and the existing pipes and circuit checked before they are reused. A straightforward back-to-back install is usually done in half a day, including the electrical circuit and commissioning. A longer pipe run, a first-floor outdoor unit or a switchboard that needs work pushes it toward a full day. The office tells you the time when it confirms the price.
Not the whole job. In Victoria the electrical connection is done by a licensed electrician, and the refrigerant pipework and commissioning by a technician with a refrigerant licence. Some people hold both; most jobs use two trades. Every FreshDuct install uses licensed electricians and ARC-licensed technicians, and it is never a DIY job.

A single wall unit cools the room it is in and a little of the space next to it with the doors open. For two to five rooms, a multi-head split runs several indoor heads from one outdoor unit. For a whole house with even temperatures, ducted reverse cycle is usually the better fit.
The indoor head is mounted on an external wall and the outdoor unit sits directly on the other side of it, so the pipe run is only a few metres. It is the quickest and simplest layout and the one most quotes assume. If your head needs to go on an internal wall, tell the office so the estimate is right.
